Cuban Parliament Agreement on the Cuban Five / Acuerdo de la Asamblea Nacional sobre los Cinco

The National Assembly of People’s Power demands the US government to put an immediate end to the unfair and illegal treatment of Gerardo Hernández Nordelo.

Summer is a holiday season for many people in Cuba. However, we need, now more than ever, to ramp up efforts and to work systematically towards the full implementation of the agreements produced at the Sixth Congress of the Cuban Communist Party, and of decisions taken by the Cuban Parliament aimed at overhauling and improving the Cuban socialist model.

In addition, we also need to redouble efforts in demanding the liberation of Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González.

Now is the time to coordinate actions and strengthen the international clamor for justice, to prevent Washington from further keeping its silence on the Cuban Five case. We have to push them to tell the truth and release the information corroborating the innocence of the Cuban Five, which they have managed to conceal through media manipulation and slander campaigns. Miami journalists unjustly reviled the Five, and even dared threatening jury members and pushing them towards a conviction, despite the judge’s protestations. We also call on the US government to release the satellite images they’ve kept secret for 15 years now, probably because they undermine the US trumped-up story of the February 24, 1996 incident. We must once again call on the international media to stop manipulating and censuring the document through which Washington recognized ten years ago they did not have enough evidence to support the accusation against Gerardo.

The ensuing weeks will be critical in reaching a decision regarding the writ of Habeas Corpus filed on behalf of Gerardo and, as has happened before, he will be facing new and harder obstacles along the way. All he’s been through sided with the precarious conditions of his confinement constitute a blatant violation of human rights, and even of US laws.

Over this crucial stage of legal proceedings, Gerardo has suffered great hardship. He has been denied full communication with his lawyers and with Cuban embassy officials; as well as access to mail, including legal documents and details regarding his case.

The National Assembly of People’s Power urges US authorities to put an immediate end to the abuses being perpetrated against Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, and calls on the world’s parliamentarians and all honest people to show their support and to continue the fight until the Cuban Five are unconditionally returned to their homeland.

Let us commit ourselves to this righteous fight. Until victory always.
