GENEVA, March 7 .- Cuba stressed today before the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), the arbitrary detention of the Five antiterrorist fighters imprisoned in U.S. jails for more than 12 years.

Speaking at the interactive discussion of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and Enforced Disappearances, the Cuban representative Juan Antonio Quintanilla said the monitoring provided by the Group in its opinion 19/2005, referring to the case of the Cuban Five and noted that far from consideration to comply, Washington had kept up its actions of political manipulation. It was a process full of irregularities and arbitrary, he said, quoted by PL. It had been a politically motivated trial in a venue totally hostile to the defendants, who were denied access to 80 % of the documents used to accuse them, and regular contacts with the defense attorneys, he added.

Quintanilla argued that the process of re-sentencing three of the Five, set by the U.S. government in their responses to the Working Group, represent a makeup solution of an inescapable fact.

"The only fair re-sentencing would be the immediate release of the five, who are innocent," he said.
