Activities supporting the Cuban Revolution and the Cuban people, especially the struggle to free the Cuban Five, were the main topics of discussion at the Solidarity with Cuba Encounter held in Havana’s Convention Center, as part of the activities scheduled for international guests visiting Cuba to celebrate May Day.

More than 1,000 delegates from dozens of trade unions, social justice organizations and solidarity groups from a hundred countries attended the traditional event, as a genuine expression of their admiration, respect and affection for the struggles Cuban men and women have undertaken for more than 50 years.

Salvador Valdés Mesa, Secretary General of the Federation of Cuban Workers (CTC) and a member of the Party’s Political Bureau, opened the event thanking the many delegations for their support and participation in May Day celebrations.

Ricardo Alarcón, President of the People’s Power National Assembly and a member of the Party’s Political Bureau participated in the forum and described the current status of the legal process facing the Cuban Five.

Also in attendance were Kenia Serrano, President of the Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP); Mirta Rodríguez, mother of Antonio Guerrero; Valentín Pacho, Adjunct Secretary General of the World Federation of Trade Unions; José Ramón Balaguer Cabrera, member of the Communist Party of Cuba’s Central Committee Secretariat and Lillian López, from La Colmenita children’s theater company, whose greetings, in the name of Cuba’s children, concluded the day.

"Obama… Give me five" - the world-wide demand for the freedom of Cuba’s Five heroes unjustly held in the U.S. was heard dozens of times from close to 40 delegates who spoke during the plenary, including Alicia Jrapko, coordinator of the International Committee for the Freedom of the Five in the United States.
