Henry Reeve (1850-1876)

RAQUEL MARRERO YANES

Born on April 4, 1850 in Brooklyn, New York, Cuban Liberation Army Brigade General Henry Reeve, best known as El Inglesito, waged his last battle on August 4, 1867, in a place near the locality of Yaguaramas in Cienfuegos.

On that day, he confronted a Spanish column with a force of only 100 men. He was shot during the battle, but continued fighting until the end. In imminent danger of being captured, he decided to take his own life.

The Cuban people will always admire the courage, impetuosity, and the maturity of El Inglesito, who fell in combat at the age of 26. He left an important legacy for the generations to come, setting an undying example of bravery and internationalism.

A man of revolutionary ideals, Henry Reeve enrolled in the Perrit expedition, which landed in Cuba through the northern coast of Holguin in 1869. Under the command of Cuban General Ignacio Agramonte, Reeve participated in audacious actions such as the rescue of General Julio Sanguily.

In honor of his memory, the Cuban Henry Reeve emergency medical brigade was named after the US-born hero. The brigade specializes in epidemics and disaster situations and is made up of Cuban and foreign doctors fully devoted to the noble task of providing free medical care to peoples in need in every corner of the world.

"... the maturity of El Inglesito, who fell in combat at the age of 26."

Remarkably mature indeed, achieving the age of 26 only 17 years after his birth! (Maybe he actually died in 1876.)
