Latin American Community to Demonstrate their Support of Democracy in Ecuador

TORONTO: The Latin American community will show its support of democracy at a press conference at noon on Friday, October 1 at the San Lorenzo Latin American Community Centre (http://www.voceslatinas.ca/Site/Voces_Latinas.html) where they will strongly denounce the destabilization attempts and coup d’état against President Rafael Correa and the Constitutional government of the Republic of Ecuador. Community members will also held a celebratory rally at 6 pm at the office of the Consulate General of Ecuador at the corner of University Ave. and Bloor St.

On Thursday, September 30, 2010, members of the National Police took President Correa in an attempted coup attempt, holding him hostage in a hospital for many hours. Thousands of Ecuadorians flooded the streets of Quito and other cities in support of the head of State demanding his liberation and the reestablishment of the rule of law. Democratically elected authorities demonstrated their unconditional support for the President and their rejection of the anti-democratic actions. Eventually President Correa was freed by the military.

Members of the Latin American community immediately held a meeting to decide their response. They stated, “Once again, privileged groups and reactionary sectors within the police and the armed forces in Ecuador in collusion with the US trained ex-Coronel Lucio Gutierrez are attempting to destroy the democratic process in Ecuador under the democratically elected government of Rafael Correa.”

The Latin American community urgently appeals to the Ecuadorian community and all Latin Americans living in Canada to be on alert and mobilize with us against this failed coup attempt against President Rafael Correa and the Ecuadorian people.

To the Ecuadorian, Canadian people and the world!

On behalf of the Latin American community residing in Canada and all of the signing organizations, we strongly denounce the destabilization attempts and coup d'etat against President Rafael Correa and the Constitutional government of the Republic of Ecuador

Once again, privileged groups and reactionary sectors within the police and the armed forces in Ecuador in collusion withe the US trained ex-Coronel Lucio Gutierrez are attempting to destroy the democratic process in Ecuador under the democratically elected government of Rafael Correa.

Thousands of Ecuadorians flooded the streets of Quito and other cities in the day and evening of Thursday, September 30th in support of the head of State and demanding his liberation and the reestablishment of the rule of law. Democratically elected authorities demonstrated their unconditional support for the President and their rejection of the anti-democratic actions.

We firmly reject the kidnapping of President Rafael Correa, who had to live dramatic hours during his kidnapping until his rescue thanks to the constant popular pressure and the timely intervention of the Ecuadorian Army. Fortunately, this dark chapter of Ecuadorian democracy ended with the release of President Rafael Correa.

Therefore, we urgently appeal to the Ecuadorian community and all Latin Americans living in Canada to be on alert and mobilize with us against this failed coup attempt against President Rafael Correa and the Ecuadorian people. Additionally,

1.- We strongly condemn the coup and the brutality exercised by these armed actors, especially the police, against the people of Ecuador
2- We alert the international community and organizations defending human rights and social movements to be on alert for future coup attempts in Ecuador by internal and external anti-democratic forces
3- We ask the help of the media to publish these reports and alert any other threat to our sisters and brothers in Ecuador
4- We call upon the Canadian people, and specifically Latin Americas in Canada to express their rejection of these coup attempts and
5- We call upon Latin Americans living in Canada to demand that the Canadian government unconditionally reject this attempt to shame and undermine democracy in Ecuador.
