Minsk, Oct 9.- Belarus paid tribute to Ernesto Che Guevara on the 44th anniversary of his assassination with a Latin American Gala at the Youth and Children Central Palace in Minsk, said diplomatic sources.
Hundreds of nationals and the diplomatic corps, including the Ambassadors of Brazil, Cuba and Venezuela, attended the ceremony that acknowledged the strength of Che's political ideals in Latin America. Cuban Ambassador Alfredo Nieves Portuondo stressed that Che is a Latin American Hero and an example for every Revolutionary around the world. He has been and will always be one of the brightest minds, giving this homage a special meaning for the unity of the people in Latin America. Nieves Portuondo denounced US aggressions in Latin America, the blockade on Cuba and the long and unjust prison sentences against the five Cuban anti-terrorists. Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez were jailed in the United States from 1998 and given harsh sentences in 2001 in biased trial and hostile environment in Miami, Florida. Rene already completed the time and has been forced to remain another three years in the United States. At the homage, the musical ensemble Ali Primera played Latin American revolutionary songs that served as background for films about Che screened at the Palace.
