People in El Salvador Demand Release of the Cuban Five

Guantanamo (Solvision).- The inhabitants of Santa Marta, in the northeastern mountains of El Salvador, demanded the immediate release of the five Cuban antiterrorists unjustly imprisoned in the U.S. since 1998 and founded a new Committee of Solidarity with Cuba.

During the ceremony of the foundation of the Solidarity Committee with Cuba and the Cuban Five, the 46th of its kind in El Salvador, Dr. Salvador Escobar recalled his years as a student at the Havana-based Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM). 

The Cuban ambassador to El Salvador, Pedro Pablo Prada, talked about brotherhood links between the Salvadorian and the Cuban peoples, which date back to the independence struggles in the 19th century and have continued strengthening through history.

Pictures and biographies of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez ––internationally know as the Cuban Five––were exhibited at the entrance of the hall that hosted  the ceremony.

Many Salvadorian youths have been trained in ELAM, including 12 inhabitants of the municipality of Victoria, where the district of Santa Marta is located.

According to the website of the Cuban Foreign Ministry (www.cubaminrex.cu), Cuba has also expanded its contribution in El Salvador in the field of sports by sending several technicians to join the chess, boxing, handball, wrestling, fencing, taek-wondo, and volleyball federations there.
