On July 26th, 1953 a group of brave young Cubans, led by Fidel Castro, attacked the Moncada and the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes garrisons, symbols of the tyranny and occupation of Cuba under the U.S. puppet regime of Batista.

Although the attack was militarily defeated, it raised the banner of struggle, which would lead to the victory of the Cuban Revolution on Jan. 1st, 1959.

This year we cheer the return of the Cuban Five to their families and their homeland and we dedicate this year’s celebration to the selfless Cuban internationalist healthcare workers who courageously volunteered to battle the Ebola virus in Western Africa and the Cuban internationalist  education workers whose hard work and dedication have taught more than eight million people throughout the world, how to read and write.

On Dec. 17th, 2014 simultaneous announcements were made by the presidents of Cuba and the U.S., Raúl Castro Ruz and Barak Obama respectively.  One of the main disclosures was on the steps being taken to establish full diplomatic relations between the two countries and it raised many concerns and questions amongst some friends of Cuba and the general public as to what would happen to the legacy of the Cuban Revolution.  We have to fully support this new move since it’s based on mutual respect which has always been one of Cuba’s requirements. We also have to keep in mind that the criminal illegal economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed on Cuba by the U.S. is still in place and it continues to hurt Cuba immensely. 

In order to understand the new relations, as well as the opportunities for advancing the Cuban Revolution at home and in the assistance it offers to other countries through its internationalist commitments, we need to continue building the solidarity movement with the socialist project of Cuba.  Please join us in this forum in order to find out the truth about this issue.  There will be ample time available for questions and comments.

Interview with Morteza Gorgzadeh from the “Toronto Forum on Cuba” following the recent liberation of the Cuban Five, who had been wrongfully jailed in the US for defending their country against extremists attacks of Cuban American exiles based in Miami.  Morteza analysed the Cuban Five’s connection with Africa, where three of them fought alongside Angolans against Apartheid South Africa.  He also discussed the recent announcement of normalization between the US and Cuba following over 50 years of brutal embargo.

Description:

Keith Ellis, Canadian/Jamaican poet and scholar, summarizes the long and violent history of U.S. efforts to destroy the Cuban revolution. The mission of the Cuban Five was to stop terrorism against Cuba. They did not harm America in any way, yet they were subject to draconian sentences.

Dr. Ellis praises the unifying role of ALBA (Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America) and especially CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States). These organizations created a unity that INCLUDES Cuba and a unity that US has not been able to penetrate.

Ellis contrasted the great humanitarian work of the Cubans, esp. their medical doctors who are at the forefront in Africa fighting Ebola, to the U.S. pursuit of militarism and torture.
* Correction - please note that when Keith Ellis references to the date of December 16th when mentioning Raúl Castro´s speech announcing the return of the Cuban Five in Cuba, he meant to say the date of December 17th.

The Five served a valid humanitarian cause

Description:

Keith Bolender fills in the spaces re the huge surprise release of the last three of the Cuban Five. Secret negotiations took place over the last 18 months between Obama and Raul Castro. Both Canada and Pope Francis worked behind the scenes facilitating the negotiations to free the Cuban Five via a prisoner exchange releasing Rolando Sarraff Trujillo, a Cuban who became a CIA agent working inside Cuban intelligence agency.

Bolender also analyzes Obama's statements to end the blockade against Cuba --including what powers Obama has and does not have. Bolender clarifies that America's strategy against Cuba has not changed, just its policy. Obama is using the stick and carrot approach.

Bolender describes the US history of terrorism against Cuba and how this terrorism led the Cuban Five to accept their mission against terror. The Five infiltrated the Cuban American terrorist groups, learned about planned terrorists attacks against Cuba and reported back to Cuba, so Cuba could stop the attacks and save hundreds of human lives.
