On Friday, October 7, at 4:30 a.m. Rene Gonzalez, one of the five Cuban men unjustly imprisoned in the United States, was released. Gonzalez will have to remain in Florida for three years on supervised release. His two daughters, Irma and Ivette, his brother Roberto, his father Candido and his lawyer Phillip Horowitz were waiting for him outside the prison, Telesur Channel special envoy Aissa Garcia reported. "Today, Rene Gonzalez has become the first of the five anti-terrorist fighters imprisoned in the United States to be released," said the reporter. Lawyer Phillip Horowitz told the reporter that Rene Gonzalez is in good health, as a medical exam following his release showed. Although he is free now, Gonzalez will not be able to return to Cuba because a judicial order obliges him to remain three more years in Florida on supervised release. Horowitz told Telesur that although Rene Gonzalez had been released from a prison where he served his sentence and kept a good behavior, he still is a prisoner of the United States. Rene Gonzalez will not be able to see his mother, Irma Sehweret, or his wife, Olga Salanueva because the United States denied them visas to go see him upon his release.
GRANMA
