Book on The Five Launched in Brazil Reveals Unpublished Documents

Havana, Cuba, Aug 20.- The book “Os ultimos soldados da Guerra Fria” (The Last Cold War Soldiers), by Brazilian writer Fernando Morais, on the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters incarcerated in the United States, is on the shelves of book shops in Brazil as of Friday. 

It provides details on the case of The Five, based on unpublished documents and interviews with all of them.

Morais had access to documents of both the FBI and the Cuban secret services to write the book. The volume, which will be officially launched on Monday in Sao Paulo, tackles the actions of the Cuban agents that had infiltrated Miami terrorist groups and the tentacles of extremist groups of Cuban origin.

In order to write the text, the author carried out 17 interviews in Cuba, 22 in the United States and one in Mexico.

Hernandez, Guerrero, Gonzalez and Labañino were interviewed thorough his relatives in Cuba, while Rene was interviewed by e-mail.

Likewise, he interviewed persons in Miami, responsible for terrorist attacks in Cuba.

The Cuban Five, as Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino are known internationally, were arrested in 1998 and submitted to a biased trial in Miami, which gave them extremely long sentences ranging from 15 years to two life imprisonments plus 15 years.
