Europe and Latin America Demand Freedom for Cuban Five

Guantanamo's Venceremos Newspaper–- French, Peruvian, and Chilean people demanded the government of the U.S. to put an end to the unjust imprisonment of five Cuban antiterrorists unfairly incarcerated since 1998.

Authorities in the French region of Longeau, 150 kilometers from Paris, expressed their support of the cause of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez ––internationally known as the Cuban Five.

According to the website of the Cuban Foreign Ministry (www.cubaminrex.cu), they met with the Cuban ambassador to France, Orlando Requeijo Gual, and the first secretary of the Cuban diplomatic mission in that country, Ernesto Rey Pino, to reaffirm their solidarity with the five men.

In the meantime, the Congress of the Republic of Peru passed a resolution asking for a review of their case so as to end the harsh terms they were sentenced to for trying to prevent terrorist actions against Cuba by Miami-based right wing groups.

The document demands the government of the U.S. to provide the Cuban Five the proper treatment, in accordance with basic rights, and to allow them to receive visits from their relatives as stated in the International Humanitarian Law.

Meanwhile, Chilean musicians, actors, and representatives from the media, from the municipality of Coyhaique, carried out cultural activities to show their solidarity with the Cuban Five. Each participant received a CD with updated information on the case of these antiterrorists.

All these activities are part of an international campaign for the release of these men, who were unjustly sentenced in 2001 to harsh terms that go from 15 years’ imprisonment up to two life terms plus 15 years.
