Camagüey, Cuba, Aug 26. - Gerardo Hernández Nordelo - one of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters imprisoned in United States – managed to send Camaguey-resident journalist student Jorge Enrique Jerez Belisario, a logo that will be used to label his web blog Jorgito por Cuba, which focuses on denouncing the injustice committed against these five patriots. “Knowing about your blog made me happy, but you've got me there with this logo thing. However, it seemed that the birthday of Amandita – Jorgito’s youngest sister- inspired me and just rounded off an idea that I really liked. I hope you like it too“, wrote Gerardo in a letter he sent from Victorville federal prison, in California. In the letter, Hernández Nordelo also hails “our family in Camagüey” and mentions what was the most difficult part of this design, “it was the line that isn’t straight, because it appears that I’m getting old and cannot trust drawing a line freehand, but I don’t have the appropriate tools either. I painted it red not only because I like it, but also because it is the best color I have here.” These words are an evidence of the shortages this Cuban hero has in this US penitentiary to develop his skills as a cartoonist, something he has practiced since younger years. Likewise, Jorge Enrique Jerez emphasizes that he “will always accompany the hero in his struggle as an unconditional son and will always treasure his letters and presents for they have a priceless sentimental meaning”.
Jorgito –as most of the peopel call him – is one of the most outstanding activists in Camagüey in the struggle for the release of the Cuban Five, in spite of his physical disabilities for he is a boy with cerebral palsy. Among the many initiatives he has pushed forward, we can mention the website Jorgito y Los Cinco, his support to several Committees in solidarity with the Cuban Five established in Camagüey province, his participation in international fora on this case and most recently the setting out of a blog entitled Jorgito por Cuba.
