_ Barack Obama
President of the United States of America - USA Dear Mr. President September 12, 2011, marked the 13th anniversary of the unfair imprisonment in the USA of five Cubans who fought against terrorism, without any evidence of guilt. Their trial took place in a partial court and was followed by a biased media campaign that sought to criminalize them. During the period of their detention, countless human rights violations have been systematically committed: they have been denied visits from their families, struggled to contact their lawyers and were submitted to lengthy periods of isolation, undermining their physical and mental health. One of those Cuban patriots, René Gonzalez, was released from prison on October 7, but a court decision compels him to stay in Miami, under supervised freedom for three years and he is at serious risk of being hit by attacks of anti-Cuban terrorist groups that take shelter in that city. Due the seriousness of the facts described above, we hereby express our full support to the demand made by the Cuban people and solidary movements that in all parts of the world claim for the unconditional liberation of those Cubans, who only defended their country from acts of terror, thus putting an end to this enormous injustice that goes on for 13 years. We believe that you can make use of the constitutional prerogatives of being the President of the United States to meet this legitimate demand. In the particular case of René González, we join the chorus of all men and women who love peace and justice and call for his immediate return to Cuba. Sincerely yours Socorro Gomes President of the World Peace Council – WPC
