Solidarity with the Cuban Five

O. Fonticoba Gener

Antonio Guerrero, one of the Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly imprisoned in the United States, turned 53 on October 16. Once again, he was not able to share that day with his beloved ones. His family, friends and supporters gathered in Havana without him to remember this special day.

In a trial plagued with irregularities and held in a highly biased Miami court, the Cuban Five —Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez— were given harsh sentences ranging from 15 years to consecutive life terms plus 15 years.

The five Cubans were working to uncover information about terrorist activities being planned and carried out against Cuba by ultra-rightwing organizations based in southern Florida with a long record of terrorist actions against Cuba and the Cuban people. When they turned their information over to authorities they were arrested and have been in jail ever since.

It is puzzling that while these five men are imprisoned for fighting terrorism, real terrorists live freely in the United States, under the protection of the U.S. government. "What’s the idea of peace, solidarity and justice of the U.S. government, the self-proclaimed "model" state?" the participants at the celebration wondered, "Is it possible for universal principles to vary from country to country?"

Organized by the Cuban Institute of Solidarity with the Peoples (ICAP), the ceremony was held at the Vibora neighborhood in the municipality of Diez de Octubre, in Havana.

In spite of the rain, young people, children and the elderly gathered to give their support to the battle for the return home of the Cuban men. "In the face of the refusal of the U.S. government to do the right thing and let the Cuban Five free," said one of the participants, "the Cuban people have only one option left: to continue fighting from our trenches of ideas, with the conviction that they will return to Cuba."

Jornada de Solidaridad con los Cinco

O. Fonticoba Gener
