_ Pablo de la Torriente Brau (1901-1936)

RAQUEL MARRERO YANES

One hundred and ten years this December 12 since the birth of Pablo de la Torriente Brau in San Juan, Puerto Rico and 75 on Monday of his death in combat in Majadahonda, Madrid, where he had decided to go to fight, shows his altruism and deep sense of solidarity and internationalism, although according to his passport he started as a journalist.

He spent his childhood between Puerto Rico, Spain and Cuba. He went to high school in the East, and Havana. He enroled for Law, but with all the political turmoil he did not conclude the specialty.

He was an athlete, journalist, brilliant storyteller that shook the literary world with his stories, and set standards in story, chronicle and testimonial writing. But above all, he was an exemplary revolutionary, a committed internationalist to the end.

In 1930 Pablo made his entry into the picture revolutionary Cuba. From then began his journey as a chronicler of the revolution. His persistent reports in the newspaper Ahora made him pursued. If journalism was his main trench, jail was his school of fighting for over two years, during which time he used to narrate the horrors suffered in the dungeons.

Titles like Pluma en ristre, La isla de los quinientos asesinos, Presidio Modelo or Aventuras del soldado desconocido cubano,(Pen in hand, The Island of the five hundred murderers, Presidio Modelo or Adventures of the Unknown Cuban Soldier)  showcase his testimonial literature of profound humanity.

In the resistance and in the rise of the Revolution, his name will always be as an leading actor, because as prophesied by the Spanish poet Miguel Hernandez, Pablol did not end in death, because he was of those who grow and gets bigger over time.
