MANICARAGUA, Villa Clara. — Hundreds of people will climb the Pico Blanco Hill, the highest peak in central Cuba, to condemn the unfair imprisonment of the Cuban Five in US jails. Internationally known as the Cuban Five, Gerardo Herandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramón Labanino, René Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero, have been serving lengthy sentences in the United States since 1998. Taking part in the event will be youths, students, combatants and workers from every municipality of the province, as well as members of the groups who work for the liberation of the Cuban antiterrorist fighters. According to the representative of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) in the region, Iris Menendez, the activity is part of the world week of solidarity with the Cuban Five, on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of their imprisonment. Other initiatives include the inauguration of exhibitions, panel discussions about the case of the Cuban Five, the US blockade on Cuba and peace, which will be attended by members of the Che Guevara Brigades of Solidarity with Cuba —made up by foreign pursuing degrees in the province of Villa Calra— and representatives from different local organizations. The Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDRs) will also organize public debates in the communities, with the participation of Olga Alfonso, State Security agent Berta, who will tell her experience and that of her husband, agent Felix, in the unveiling of a plan to attack the Che Guevara Memorial. The Mejunje Cultural Center will be organizing concerts by local artists, who will also be denouncing the cruel treatment given our compatriots in US jails. GRANMA
