By: René Tamayo - juventudrebelde.cu CARACAS.— A month ago, five young graduates from the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana began an expedition by motorcycle across Latin America to manifest their support of five Cuban antiterrorists being unjustly held in US jails and demand their immediate liberation once and for all. Since leaving the Venezuelan Amazon nearly a month ago, Bolivian Juan Tola, Argentine Darío Valenzuela and Milco Figueroa have travelled by motorcycle more than 1,500 km demanding freedom for Gerardo Hernández, René González, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and Ramón Labañino and denouncing the unfair trial against them. Their final objective is reaching La Patagonia in Argentina. Meanwhile, Argentine Nicolás Bravo and Uruguayan-Venezuelan Laura Machín, the other two members of the group, are in charge of providing logistic support and of making sure preparations are in place to successfully carry out promotion work in support of the Five in the visited cities. Since graduating in 2009 from the Latin American School of Medicine based in Havana, the five doctors have been providing medical assistance to indigenous communities in hard-to-reach areas of the Venezuelan Amazon. The initiativeSembrando caminos con los Cinco is aimed at spreading the truth about the Five’s unjust situation and at stepping up international solidarity in their support through lectures and presentations of audiovisual materials regarding the Cuban Five case. With this continental trek, the young doctors join the growing international clamor for justice and also pay tribute to Ernesto Che Guevara and his friend Alberto Granado, who in 1952 embarked on an expedition across South America going all the way from Buenos Aires to Venezuela. The doctors arrived in Caracas on Tuesday afternoon, July 31, after campaigning in support of the Five across numerous cities in the Venezuelan states of Tachira and Merida. Awaiting them at their arrival in Caracas where a group of Cuban internationalists serving in Venezuela as well as members from Venezuelan political organizations. During a friendly gathering, the ELAM graduates narrated passages of their journey as they conversed with Cuban and Venezuelan collaborators. Addressing participants, coordinator of the Venezuela-Cuban Friendship Movement Maria Leon commended the humanitarian and revolutionary commitment of the ELAM doctors to the ongoing struggle for the liberation of the five Cubans. Also attending the meeting was Cuban Ambassador to Venezuelan Rogelio Polanco. In his remarks, Polanco spoke highly of the courage and unwavering resolution of these young men and women, who selflessly took on this daunting task in an irrefutable confirmation that the fight will go on until Gerardo, René, Antonio, Fernando and Ramón are finally released. Supporting them in the endeavour is the International Committee to Free the Cuban Five and other social organizations. In this spirit, the five ELAM doctors as well as peoples across the Latin American continent pledge to continue the struggle for the liberation of the five Cuban antiterrorists and to promote just ideals in the future with the conviction that a better world is possible.
