Brussels, July 12.— Euro-deputies from different countries led by Spanish representatives Miguel Ángel Martínez and Willy Meyer, asked for the freedom of the five Cuban anti-terrorism fighters unjustly held in U.S. penitentiaries.

In a letter addressed to U.S. President Barack Obama, the parliamentarians recalled that members of this political body have previously demanded that justice be done in the case of the Cuban Five, as they are known worldwide.

The Cuban Five are Antonio Guerrero, René González, Ramón Labañino, Gerardo Hernández and Fernando González, who are serving long sentences in U.S. penitentiaries for thwarting terrorist actions planned in U.S. territory against Cuba.

The letter demands president Obama to make use of his presidential prerogatives to put an end to the unjust imprisonment of the Cuban Five that has lasted more than 12 years.

Martínez, who is a socialist euro-deputy and the president of the Group of Friendship with Cuba in the Parliament; and Meyer, vice-president of the group and member of the European united Left-Nordic/Green Left group, also made reference to the visits to the penitentiaries.

The 25 signers of the letter commented on Washington’s arbitrary decision of denying visas to two of the Cuban Five’s wives (Gerardo’s and Rene’s) to visit them in the penitentiaries.

The letter also highlights the international campaign raised around the case which has been endorsed by several international groups, 10 Nobel Prize recipients and U.S. former President James Carter. (PL)

(PL)
