Havana, Cuba, May 11.- Günter Belchaus, former adviser to the German Ministry of Justice recently wrote a letter to US President Barack Obama asking him to release the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters –known as the Cuban Five– imprisoned in that country since 1998.
Belchaus, who is a member of the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban Five, wrote in his letter that Obama has the power to release the Cuban antiterrorist fighters and he mentioned the exact article within the American Constitution allowing its president to make such call, according to a PL report. The retired German lawyer urged Obama to use his power “for the sake of justice, for the sake of mankind and in favor of human rights and to justify the hopes of so many people around the world.” Belchaus said even though Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez are innocent, they continue in prison after more than 13 years when they were arrested and convicted to harsh prison terms for monitoring criminal organized –with Washington’s consent – by anti-Cuba terrorist groups based in Florida. Belchaus told Obama justice should be made regarding the case of terrorist Luis Posada Carriles who lives freely in Miami where he is protected although he is responsible for the death of many Cubans. Belchaus participated in 2005 in an international colloquium of solidarity with the Cuban Five held in the Cuban city of Holguin. More than one hundred supporters from Europe and Latin America participate annually in the event. (acn). Radio Cadena Agramonte
