The Ghana Trade Union Congress (TUC) has added its voice to the calls on the United States government to as a matter of urgency release the Cuban Five, describing their continuous incarceration as questionable. The Cuban Five, namely Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez and Ramon Labanino were convicted by a Miami court following their arrest on September 12th 1998. The condition, under which the Cuban patriots were convicted, according to the TUC, was in violation of Article 14 of the International Convention on Civil and Political Liberties to which the United State is a signatory. "The Ghana Trade Union congress identifies with and supports the campaign for the unconditional release of the Five Cuban compatriots. We noted that on May 27, 2005, after an exhaustive review of presentation made by the families of the Cuban Five and the US government, concluded that their imprisonment was arbitrary and urged the US government to take appropriate measures to rectify this unjust situation," It added. The call was made in Accra on Wednesday, on the occasion to mark the 58th anniversary of assault on Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes. In a statement read for him, the General Secretary of the TUC, Mr. Kofi Asamoah, indicated that only peaceful co-existence among nations and respect for territorial integrity could ensure lasting peace in the world. He used the occasion to urge the US Government under the leadership of President Barrack Obama to distance itself from the principles of double standard and ensure that the Cuban Five are released. The Cuban Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Miguel Perez Cruz, observed that it was time for the renewal of patriotism and unity and to continue the process of emancipation and social justice for the Cuban revolution. According to him, the US Government over the years has carried out aggressive actions against Cuba, implementing and refining its subversive policies against the Cuban revolutionary process inspired by their failed aspiration of overthrowing the revolution. He said the commemoration of the assault on Moncada is a continuity of Cuban revolutionary process and therefore poses new challenges in the light of US embargo against Cuba. He noted, "no matter the difficulties that face us, we are still the masters of the future. We are determined to advance our system on the basis of our own formula and we shall make the changes necessary to perfect our socialism. "We shall never renounce our dreams for justice for all people over the world. In these 50 years of revolution we have multiplied the international solidarity with positive impact on social and economic reality of other sister nations." On his part, Dr. Yao Graham, a member of the Cuban Solidarity campaign, observed that as Cuba struggles for economic transformation inequalities were widening and therefore it was necessary to recognize the importance of cooperation. He encouraged the people of Cuba to remain united as the path for transformation has always been difficult. Present at the event were representatives of the Socialist Forum of Ghana, Ghanaians Trained in Cuba, the National Union of Ghana Students, the Trades Union Congress as well as some Cubans resident in Ghana.
