Fernando González, one of the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly held in US penitentiaries, turned 48 years old yesterday. The celebration brought together members of the Third International Brigade of Foreign Students, representatives of the International Committee of Solidarity with the Cuban Five- as they known worldwide-, and family members of the Cuban Five.

Fernando’s mother Magalis Llort thanked all the youths for their presence in the celebration. She then transmitted his son’s message in which he expressed feeling honoured by having so many people from different nationalities coming together to celebrate his birthday.

Magalis also said that knowing there are so many young people fighting for justice to be done in the case of the Cuban Five makes her son feel hopeful.

The youths gathered at the celebration calling for the freedom of the Cuban Five amidst dances, poetry and memoirs on the struggle for the freedom Cuban Five shared by students from several Havana colleges.

Participants at the celebration received an update on the unfair and rigged trial the Cuban Five - Fernando, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, René González and Gerardo Hernández-, are going through.

Organized by the Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and held at the Julio Antonio Mella International Camp, in Caimito, in the western-province of Artemisa, the meeting was also attended by coordinator of the International Committee of Solidarity with the Cuban Five Graciela Ramírez.

One of the youths taking part in the celebrations, US citizen David Lavender said: "Knowing that a court in my country has acted unjustly put us, the citizens, in a similar place. If we face a similar situation tomorrow we could have the same fate. That’s why we need this situation to change."

Palestinian Mohamed Abu Srour also voiced his support for the Cuban Five: "We know what they are going through. We have more than 10,000 comrades incarcerated. We feel and we will support this struggle because we know it is for a fair cause and we shall overcome with the unity of our hands and our forces."
