Italian Activists Carry out Activities in Solidarity with the Cuban Five

HAVANA, Cuba, July 8 (acn) A group of members of the Association of Internationalist Solidarity with Cuba (AsiCubaUmbria) chained themselves to each other on Wednesday in front of the largest fountain of the Italian province of Perugia to condemn the imprisonment in the United States of five Cuban antiterrorists.

The militants of AsiCubaUmbria wore white masks and had the faces of The Five on their chests, and demanded justice for these patriots, as informed by the www.cubaminrex.cu Web site.

Many people stopped to ask about and took pictures of the action, among them US citizens on a visit to Perugia, who didn’t know anything about the issue, due to the total silence on the case imposed by the US media.

They learned that Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez were arrested in 1998 and condemned to sentences ranging from 15 years to two life imprisonments plus 15 years, for monitoring the activities of Florida-based anti-Cuban terrorist groups.

In Perugia, dozens of signatures for the campaign “One million signatures for The Five” were collected.

AsiCubaUmbria will continue its battle for the release of Gerardo, Fernando, Ramon, Antonio and Rene, which gets stronger on the fifth of every month, as part of the international campaign On the Fifth for The Five.

At the Roca de Umbertide, a photographic exhibition on Cuba was inaugurated.

Attending the inauguration were Marco Vinicio Guasticchi, president of the province of Perugia; Gianfranco Giulietti, mayor of Umbertide; Alessandra Ciattini, anthropologists of the University of La Sapienza of Rome, and Vladimir Perez, counselor of the Cuban diplomatic mission to the Italian capital, among others.

The mayor praised the photography work by Paolo Ferrara, who has begin to carry out a work of great anthropologic value that draws the peoples of Cuba and Italy closer together.

In his speech, Ciattini went into the sociopolitical characteristics of religions for

communication and the enjoyment of freedom of worship on the Caribbean island.
