Skin Divers in Playa Giron Honor Cuban Five

In the waters of Playa Giron, the site of the Cuban Bay of Pigs victory, skin divers placed a a commemorative plaque honoring the five antiterrorist fighters imprioned in the United States.

The Cuban skin divers said they wanted call attention to the campaign to free Gerardo Hernandez, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, known as the Cuban Five, who were arrested in Miami on September 12, 1998 and have been in prison ever since.

"We chose Playa Giron because it where the largest number of people practice diving in Cuba and because of its historical significance," said Angel Roca, one of the organizers, to Prensa Latina on Monday.

Placed on the hull of a shipwreck, now a tourist attraction, the plaque may be seen by more than 1,000 people who practice this sport, most of them foreigners, Roca said.

Playa Giron was the site of the U.S.-government financed and organized mercenary invasion 50 years ago, defeated by the Cuban people and armed forces in 72 hours, Washington's first military defeat in the Americas. / PL
