Havana, Cuba, Jun 16.- The Commission for Foreign Affairs of the Congress of Deputies (Lower Chamber) of Spain urged the Government to intercede with the US administration for the release of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters imprisoned in the US.
In a motion passed by the Commission, the Spanish deputies make reference to the international actions in favor of the release of Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez. The document says that President Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero should take into account that similar requests have been already issued by other governments, parliaments and several organizations. According to Prensa Latina,the motion encourages the Spanish government to intercede with Washington on behalf for the relatives of the Cuban Five who have not been allowed to visit them in jail to be able to do so. This is the first time the lower Chamber of the General Courts (Spanish parliament) states a position regarding the Cuban Five. The motion was promoted by the Joint Parliamentary Group on behalf of the Nationalist Galician Block, Esquerra Republicana of Catalonia, United Left and Green Catalonia’s Initiative.
